Does the infamous first album by the Residents count, with its direct parody of another famous album cover, with the famous faces distorted in various ways?
I just thought of 3 others (well, one is a band who was known for putting well known women, models on the cover, so several there alone), but I want to give others a chance to get a word in.
Most folks might recognize Christopher Lee and James Coburn, but there are four other celebrities there that folks from the UK would likely have recognized back in the day.
The woman shown here making Dave Brubeck feel like the luckiest guy in the world was Suzy Parker, one of the top models of the 1950’s, star of countless magazine covers and who later appeared in a Twilight Zone episode and later still was the namesake for a Beatles song.
The photo was taken by Richard Avedon at the hungry i nightclub in San Francisco.
Welp, I gotta do Alice - art was drawn by the great Drew Struzan, with the band surrounded by period movie stars like Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, Robert Taylor, Edward G. Robinson, Jean Harlow, Peter Lorre, and Groucho Marx.
The inner sleeve showed them with Marilyn Monroe, Gary Cooper, Judy Garland, Errol Flynn, Clara Bow, Boris Karloff, Zasu Pitts, Tyrone Power, Bela Lugosi, Marlene Dietrich, Tallulah Bankhead, Veronica Lake and Alan Ladd.
When asked why they didn’t use this or that star, bassist Dennis Dunaway said they could only use the dead… I don’t know why. They were only allowed to use Groucho because he was friends with Alice.
I still don’t know why they drew the drummer, Neal Smith that short, he was a tall dude.
But as a fan of classic Hollywood and its stars, it’s always been one of my favorite covers.

TP are remembered today mostly for two things: they got in trouble with Pink Floyd and their fans for reading out Syd Barrett’s home address during a show; and their drummer was a fellow called Mark Sheppard who later took up acting and appeared in things like Firefly, Supernatural, Leverage, Battlestar Galactica, and… just about everything else, really.
