So, the original, unriffed version of Carnival of Souls is streaming on Criterion, yes, really. DISCUSS!
If you don’t have access to Criterion and you can tolerate commercials, Tubi has 4 versions: The original b/w, in color, Rifftrax and RiffTrax Live.
It’s a genuinely creepy movie. I’d seen it many times before it was riffed. In fact, I was little taken aback, but the stilted vibe works for comedy as well as horror.
Love Carnival of Souls!
And we can’t forget about director Herk Harvey’s other MST3K/RiffTrax credits, courtesy of MST3K Fandom:
- Speech: Using Your Voice (for Earth vs. the Spider) - as American Flag Speechmaker
- Cheating (for The Wild Wild World of Batwoman) - director
- What About Juvenile Delinquency? (for The Atomic Brain) - director
- Why Study Industrial Arts (for The Skydivers) - director
- Speech: Platform Posture and Appearance (for Red Zone Cuba) - as The Good Speechmaker
- Shake Hands with Danger (RiffTrax) - director
- The Snob (RiffTrax) - director
- Buying Food (RiffTrax) - director
- Health: Your Posture (RiffTrax) - director
- Halloween Safety (Bridget & Mary Jo; The Mads Are Back) - director
I would dig seeing it in wide(ish) screen. I am presuming that the Legend Films version (with optional Mike solo riff) and the Rifftrax dvd (that you can watch unriffed) might be cropped.
Anybody know?
The Carnival of Souls Rifftrax DVD does seem to be cropped.
I liked it. Really incredible what they got for $30,000.
