Category suggestions

We’ve launched this beta test with a handful of categories (“MST3K Central,” “Artsy Craftsy,” and so on), and while we don’t want to go TOO nuts with a million options just yet, we do want to hear from you if there’s anything we’ve missed. Is there a subject you’d like to discuss here that doesn’t fit in any of the current categories? Let us know.

Perhaps era categories? KTMA, Comedy Channel/Central, SciFi, Netflix, Gizmoplex

Since this is an early roll out, obviously we don’t need everything right off that bat, but completely agree that it makes sense to have categories broken down by era.

This way people can navigate to those locations where they most want to talk about episodes or content from those period.

For me I would go:
KTMA
Comedy Channel/Central
SciFi
Netflix

Then I would have an area that just says “New Season”. Once season 13 is complete, could that area then be put into a category like “Gizmoplex”?

I just like the idea of a separate area where we can discuss any “New Season” concepts or ideas.

I’m gonna be that guy.

That guy that bucks common sense and decency.

The guy that suggests that politics and religion should be talked about in polite company.

Why? Because those things are SUPER important aspects of humanity.

Now, of course if such a category were added, it would have to be HEAVILY moderated, but just because something is hard to control, doesn’t mean we shouldn’t try to control it.

Just because some topics are hard to discuss in an even handed and civilized way… doesn’t mean we shouldn’t TRY to.

I, for one, have found some great discussions among my other major fandom (City of Heroes video game) and made lifelong friends simply by the virtue of being able to discuss such important topics with people that share the same interests, people that are intelligent, kind, and considerate. People that won’t pre-judge or assume the worst in others.

And I think the MST3K community are such people, and I’d love to discuss the normally “taboo” subjects with them in an open forum.

I might be in the minority, but I think it’s important.

I also think we need one SPECIFICALLY for the Gizmoplex, separate from MST3K and the Kickstarter itself.

A fellow idealist, I see. If any crowd on the internet could pull off such a feat – civilized discourse about politics and religion – it would be MSTies. But … just because we could do it, does that mean we should do it?

HOW DARE YOU QUESTION ME I’LL MURDER YOU IN YOUR SLE- ahem excuse me, something caught in my throat there.

Of course we should, and I’ll tell you why - tribalism. My worst enemy. We have to destroy it, inch by inch, and bit by bit.

It’s the only way that I believe we’ll escape the Monkeysphere (or get to Carnegie Hall, for that matter) - practice, practice, practice!

I am not opposed to this, as a person with a lot of experience moderating extremely political communities in the semi-distant past. However we would need a very strong volunteer mod team, and very clear guidelines for everyone to follow.

We will be formally announcing these forums in a backer update in another week or two, so let’s see how things after that and maybe we can return to this idea as things settle into a routine.

I would love to be able to “like” your post Lesley, but… sadly… the forums are stopping me from doing so:

I understand putting a limit on replies because of spam reasons, but I don’t understand how spamming “likes” would even be a problem? LOL

Perhaps it’s an effort to prevent someone with a second account from pumping up their own “Likes” for the purpose of inflating their “ePeen”?

Why do people feel the need to get gigantic trucks that they’ll never use for actual heavy duty work, and instead just cruise through their suburb with it?

The world is full of mysteries!

Maybe a category specifically for the tour?

I happily offer to moderate! My job is very slow and MST3K pretty much fills my day

@Lesley
Can we have category for the fandom activities? Like meet ups, exchanges, where are you located, etc
Help more msties connect

Good idea. I’ll add that to my to-do list. I’m debating the merits of a tour-specific category because, as someone else has noted, having too many overly specific categories can get unwieldy. But if there’s enough discussion on it, I will eventually add one.

Honestly, I’d have to disagree. MST3K is about good clean fun. Religion and politics are not. Even if people manage to be polite, it divides them. One of the things I love most about the MST3K fandom is the all inclusiveness and welcoming attitude, but if you throw religion and politics in, people’s opinions of each other will drastically change, and however much you moderate it, there will be those that will drag their opinions and resentment started in those threads out into the rest like a cancer. I’ve seen way too many threads and online communities destroyed because of it. I think in this case, we should not even start. There are plenty of other places to discuss that, if that’s what you like.

Whatever the reason, I think we might have fixed it? Let me know if it continues limiting how many times you can like something per day. I just doubled the “cap” from 50 to 100.
