I spent a couple minutes trying to make out the constellations they had outlined in the stars before I realized they were strings of lights!

That is true.
They had a ‘duh’ moment when they found that ST:TNG used cardboard with holes punched in it for their starfield.
Or so I learned on the studio tour way back when.

But after The Movie, they started using little pieces of tape instead of the string of lights because that’s how Hollywood did it.
