Well, Shin Godzilla did show that you can do something new (and terrifying) with the material, so I remain hopeful. It could even work with the “trapped ensemble” motif he’s used to great effect in Assault On Precinct 13, Prince Of Darkness, The Thing, and The Fog, focusing the action on a stranded group of survivors with Godzilla being the overwhelming and unstoppable threat.
