Just noticed that Tubi has all the Gamera films un-MSTed except for the first one, but has both the MST3K and Rifftrax versions of that one.
I’m in the process of watching all the ones I hadn’t seen before.

That does sound like a lot of fun, running the gamut of Gamera!
Fantastic! I know what I’ll be doing tomorrow!
It sounds really neat!
Huh. The first Gamera was the very first MST I ever saw. Flipped it on totally by accident while in a hotel on vacation in Myrtle Beach SC in 1990 (I think it was.) The whole family was at first completely befuddled then highly amused. Good memories.
Mmmmm. Beef uddle.
I just watched ‘gamera super monster’, which I’d never seen, and it is totally nuts! it’s very ‘70s, features 3 space women (very electra woman and dyna girl influenced), an annoying kid who is really into organ music, fights from all the other gamera films’ b rolls (hello zigra, gaos, barugon, and jiger) which basically makes it like ‘destroy all monsters’ for the gamera set, and is just a blast. I hope mst3k decides to do it in the future cuz they’d have a field day with it. oh and they keep calling him gaMERa vs GAMera, no idea why.
Oh, yikes. That… yeesh. That’d be tough to deal with, not gonna lie.
I like that that’s the part where this falls apart for you
Heh, they got me to invest in the characters, man!
I just rewatched the Heisei trilogy and I just love these films so much.
If you haven’t seen them, these are the Gamera films from the 90s. Unlike the movies from the 60s and 70s we know from MST3K, the 90s films aren’t cheesy. No one was made in a hurry. The practical effects were fantastic, even by today’s standards, and for the time, the CGI was well done and used sparingly.
The stories are solid and compelling. You actually care about the human characters and their perspectives. Not to mention, Gamera, friend of all children, is a badass with heart and puts up some great fights.
These are my favorite kaiju films. I think they may be the best ever made, although Shin Godzilla is a strong competitor.
If they listened to Japanese pronunciation, the vowel sound difference may have thrown them off. Gah-meh-r/lah. The syllables should also be more evenly inflected so yeah, probably really funky not to hear GAMmeruh.
Anyone doing a mini-fest for NYE? My intro to MST3K involved a lot of Gamera while hit with a flu so hard that I couldn’t leave the couch for three days… but all the same, this IS the week for it so…
The 90’s Gameras are fantastic and were a real palate cleanser to the Heisei Godzilla movies of the time. Advent of Legion is a movie you constantly are going “Damn, they’re going THAT hard with this.”
Revenge of Iris is legit one of the best kaiju films of all time. Legion isn’t far behind it. The later reboot is a weird mesh of trying to be brutal and kid friendly but has a cute baby Gamera.
when are they gonna riff Gamera vs. Viras?
it’s got a lot of prime riffing opportunities.
I wasn’t nuts about Gamera the Brave as I am about the Heisei trilogy, but I will give them full marks for finding a middle ground between “goofy kids movie with turtles” and “monster fighting” that you could have seen working as a series.
yeah, that’s pretty much my take on it
balanced goofy with kaiju action fairly well
