General All-Purpose Doctor Who Thread

Say it ain’t so, Doctor!

I didn’t even see that it could be read as a garden-path sentence until I realized what thread I was in.

We went to Who North America yesterday. It was fun for the 20 minutes it took to look around, but oh my god was everything expensive. The sort of prices I would expect at a con. All we ended up buying was a Hitchhiker’s Guide sticker (they had some other sci-fi stuff as well) and that was $9.

Still, you have never seen so much Doctor Who stuff in one place. And the amount of inventory they have is massive. I have no idea where they get it all.

Just found this picture online. That is half of the toy aisle. And the cheapest one of those toys is probably $30. Like if you want a Graham action figure you’ll get a better deal. But why would you want a Graham action figure?

The book aisle was just astounding. I had no idea that many books related to Doctor Who- fiction and non-fiction existed.

I suspect a lot of the price comes from the fact they have to import from the UK. Also, pricing for DW stuff is high. I’ve complained for years about what the BBC was asking for season DVDs. $50-$60 for 13 episodes? No. Just no. (And these were DVD’s. not Blu-Ray, not 4K, but the good old days of DVDs)

That always ends up being a pre-order / early adopter penalty. They’re so often down to half that within a couple months. Very often these days, the “Complete David Tennant” BluRay set is $22 on Amazon, and the not so popular Jodi Whittaker seasons are like $12 each.

Oh I get that, but that’s what an American show charges for 22-24 episodes. The fact the Beeb wanted just as much for half the content was always choke-worthy. (And I always waited for the prices to come down)

Maybe, but like $50 for an action figure of a character you might actually want or $80 for one of a character you most likely would want?

Welp folks,Doctor Who has created something related to and even scarier then Mr. B…And they’re even NB…

Wow! Such energy in this new series (season/Doctor)! It’s already a wild ride, and we’re just getting started. “Space Babies”!! … is the title of the first of two episodes released overnight.

So far, IMO, the series is hitting all the notes, highs and lows, brights and blues, etc. I’m all in. YMMV.

I’m excited to see how this season goes. Just going by the Christmas special it was clear that the ship had righted. The Doctor was the Doctor again. Too bad Jodie couldn’t have another writer for her episodes.

I probably won’t get to see the two new ones for a few days. Need to do all the Mother’s Day cooking prep today and the day is tomorrow.

It is a massive shame we had such a great Doctor with Jodie, and such…not with her writers

I think Jodie would benefit a lot from playing her Doctor in Big Finish one day.

As for the new episodes, they were silly but also SO MUCH FUN. Like, I really have missed the days when Doctor Who was FUN. The Chibnall era never felt this fun – it often felt like “Look at this fun we’re having. This is fun and we’re having it.” And now, RTD II feels like, “F U U U U N!”

I feel like there have never been “bad” Doctors (in terms of actors) just bad approaches by the writers. The sixth Doctor is considered a low point but I think Colin Baker does a great job. And there’s a good idea behind him; what if the Doctor’s worst instincts (arrogance, short temper, dismissiveness of his friends) resulted in a more antiheroic version. But then he didn’t get to do anything and they put the poor guy in a clown suit. It’s interesting to see in season one Sylvester McCoy is nearly done as dirty as “the bumbling Doctor” before they pivoted him more to “calculating” Doctor.

Colin also fares a lot better in his audios.

It’s all about the writing, and sadly Chibnall and Whiteaker thought they were doing great things. I just couldn’t play along.

Space Babies is a decent episode, clearly doing a lot of place setting while doing stand alone story. It has some of the juvenile humour I expect from Davies but not to a terribly off-putting degree. The title babies could also been really annoying but they are mostly just… there. I think the only particularly engaging moment with them is the visual of a baby with a toy sword trying to be brave. Anyway, solid first outing, I’ll watch the other new one later this week.

It was clear from the off (to me at least) that Chibnall was more interested in “making his mark on the lore” than actually telling good stories. He is what happens when you let the fanboys have at it.

For example, no one cared about the Mobious doctors other than a few fans who have argued (mostly good-naturedly) over what we saw in that scene. Chibnall, though, just had to stuff his version of “fact” into it and basically destroy the character at the same time.

To me Chibnalls’ stories committed the worst of sins for Doctor Who. His stories were dull and boring. Which is why I was so happy to see the energy Ncuti brought back to the role at Christmas. Can’t wait to get some time and watch the first two episodes.

Ahh got a chance to watch Space Babies.

A bit silly, but a good kind of silly. Most of the kids were animated enough. (I mean them, not the strange bit of CGI for their mouths.) The little girl acting as captain was such a cutie! Loved her smile.

I thought it was interesting the Doctor was not only afraid of the bogeyman (and BTW EWWWW!!!), but he wanted to know why he was afraid. Nice that they came up with an interesting answer instead of just teeing up the question and then leaving it there, hanging.

I also liked that the Doctor put his foot down that he would not take Ruby to the church where she was left. Would have been a nice moment for a callback to Rose and her Dad, but I get why they didn’t.

Lots of energy. Ncuti had a lot of animation and movement and didn’t just stand around pontificating. Ruby was eager for adventure and went with it instead of standing around acting like a block of wood.

Overall a good start. Hope to get a chance to watch the Beatles episode tomorrow.

Space Babies: Did anyone else here, every time the Doctor said “Push the button”, think to themselves, “Push the button, Frank”?
