Gypsy and Richard Basehart...Crow and Kim Cattrall... Tom and Creepy Girl... Joel and Waffles...

Gypsy loved Richard Basehart. Crow loved Kim Cattrall. Tom loved Creepy Girl. Joel adored Waffles. Why the love? What was it that was special? What drove the bots or Joel wild? Over and over? Physical attraction, taste, screen presence, Joel or the bots themselves, the writers? They couldn’t stop talking about them. Defining moments? Behavior that stuck out? Your favorite instance?

Theo’s Sandwiches in Old Town used to sell a “Joe Waffle.” Just a fresh, hot waffle folded over with a bit of maple-y butter, a fried egg, and the breakfast meat of your choice. Not the best breakfast sandwich, but distinctly above average. Affordable, and up to 50% less greasy than anything you could get at Jack In The Box. I’d treat myself every other week or so en route to work. I’d sip my coffee and imagine that someday Mr. H’s eyes and mine would meet across a crowded convention, and we’d ultimately slip away from the madding crowd to go have a couple of these together. (With coffee, of course.) And yes, I’d return him to the con before anyone noticed his absence. I’m generous that way.

Now Theo’s is gone: just another Covid casualty. They struggled on bravely longer than most, but it’s always the same in the end.

Yet the dream lives on in my heart. As a sullen, late summer sun struggles to rise above the Portland sky and the MAX rolls me past the restaurant’s dark, long-shuttered exterior, a single tear slides down my (masked) cheek as I murmur, “Get outta’ town, ya’ nut.” :broken_heart:

Servo’s love/hate turns on a dime, though, right Canada?

This is true. Let’s not forget the time he fell in love with a blender…until he learned she was just giving it away to anyone who came along, and he quickly moved on…

Pearl and casinos. (There used to be a cheese called Casino, so that seems especially correct.)

It broke my heart so badly that I’d blacked out the memory… until now. This thread’s really got my sentimental side going at full tilt.
