I’d seen the name before, but to me, what put Michael Reaves in my pantheon of great animation writers was his work on Disney’s Gargoyles. While Greg Weisman created the show, Reaves served as the head writer and story editor, so a lot of the tone of the show came from him.

But he contributed to just. SO. Darn much. He-Man. Spider-Man. Dungeons & Dragons. The Smurfs. One could argue that he had a hand in literally writing out my childhood.

I knew this was coming before too much longer given his age, but it’s still a bit of a shock. He was akin to the Henry Ford of the semiconductor industry. He didn’t invent the microprocessor, but what he and the company he helped found has done with them in the decades since…
