I’m watching A*P*E now. There are some things I’m uncomfortable with: some brief orientalism from the American characters, and the fictional rape scene. Editing would be needed.
That said, there is some good stuff here. At 35:25, I swear I hear Torgo’s theme!
On the issue of the ape changing size, he picked up and threw a snake near the beginning. The snake was normal scale for a human. Hilarious!
I’m about halfway through the film now. Back to watching.
Edit: The ape smashing a helicopter and dramatically giving it the finger at 53:23 is stunning!
I’m not surprised it has some problems. It’s a cheap knock-off movie from a time when lots of awful stuff was still tolerated. Editing is going to be our friends for lots of old movies like this. Or you riff on it, depending on the degree of ick-factor.
Wouldn’t be the first time a rape scene had to be edited out. I think it was Girl with the Golden Boots that had to add a comment by the hosts to cover an edited out scene
Fortunately, removing the exploitative sections of a movie usually leaves the rest of it intact. Assuming there is anything left to work with. It gets unfortunate when they toss in an offensive element into an important scene.
I’m a big proponent of freedom of speech, so I’d rather leave those scenes in, handling them with social commentary instead of censorship. (Example from Cry Wilderness: Dumb kid: “You’re just a dumb Indian!” All: “Woooah!”) I’ve resigned myself to censoring the out of the source material to get a G-rating, just to keep everyone happy. Funny how this changes over time.
I did finish watching The Pirate Movie. It’s really bad.
The “Pumping and Blowing” song was quite awkward. The horses drove me nuts, as already established. The end didn’t make much sense, of course. On a positive note, I’d say the choreography throughout (both dancing and fighting) wasn’t bad for a budget flick.
Things that weigh heavily toward rejecting for riffing include the lengthy songs and the fact that it is trying to be a spoof, actively parodying things like Star Wars and Indiana Jones. The filmmakers weren’t actually trying to make a serious movie.
Still, I’m sort of glad I watched it because I now have a movie I can torture someone with if I ever need it.
Poll Rules - Please only vote for a movie that you did NOT suggest. It’s the only way that we’ll be able to prevent everyone from just voting for “their” movie. And, since there’s no way to prove who voted for what, it’s the honor system.
This poll will run for 48 hours. After that, if there’s no clear winner, then the bottom vote getter(s) will be dropped off the list, and the poll will be re-run over and over every 48 hours, until we have a “winner”.
If everyone else wants it longer, sure… but in my opinion, we should go with snap judgements. I formed my opinions based on the trailers alone, being completely unfamiliar with any of those movies.
