Let's Talk Baseball

For the most part, the Brewers have been fun to watch this season. Here’s hoping it continues for many more games. :crossed_fingers:t3::crossed_fingers:t3::crossed_fingers:t3:

The Cleveland Spiders would like to remind you that they once existed …
and request that you politely hold their beer.

Technically true, but they were around when owners were allowed to own more than one team, and their team was stripped to furnish the owner’s other team, so it’s a different state of affairs from today. Ownership of more than one team was banned shortly afterward.

The rules at the time allowed it. And those rules got changed mid-season which made it even worse for them. Since nobody was going to Spiders games, their opponents refused to travel, and the Spiders finished up playing 85 out of 93 games on the road. After that season, the team was booted from the league, and rules put in place to ensure that it never happened again.
They could have booted the Spiders out of the league during the season and wiped out the results of their games already played. And if they had done so, then their results would not stand. But they didn’t, so the record stands.
20-134 could still be worsened someday. 101 road losses won’t.

Interesting, never heard of the Spiders, so I read up on it and learned something new today. Fascinating bit of sports history.

Allow me to rephrase that to “modern” era of baseball, since that seems to be what everyone else out there in the wide world of sports is doing.

At least 2 of the surviving 62 Mets players don’t want to see them break the modern record. Anderson and Hook… one reason… "I wouldn’t wish it on anybody,” agreed Hook.

Well, that’s nice of him.

I know sometimes I talk more about the broadcasts than the games, and I’m going to do it again.
MLB.TV has found a way to annoy me almost as much as by playing Yankee highlights between innings. Every commercial break now starts with the same ad in which a computer-generated mother and her computer-generated son argue about how to set the custom light pattern for the turn signals on their car. It’s been going on for a couple of months.
This may not sound that bad, but 30 times a game (literally) it’s a bit wearing. I find myself diving for the remote’s mute button at each commercial break so that I don’t have to hear these two people again.

A grand slam, a walk-a-thon, and the Mets win their 7th with a sweep of the Red Sox, man we just need to keep playing teams with Sox in their name.

Unfortunately, the Braves and Phillies refuse to lose (how rude of them), the Jays opened with a big lead the other day, but went and pissed it all away. So, Colorado and Miami, NYM is off tomorrow, can you do us a big favor and WIN! it would mean a lot to me.

The Phillies have had some wild games in the last week, pulling off some crazy comebacks and walk offs. Hopefully the post-all-star slump is over.

Larry Anderson on the radio was a little upset that our pitchers didn’t do anything to retaliate during the games with the Jays after 3 of our players got hit by pitches. On one hand I agree messages should be sent, but on the other hand there are so many pitchers these days that are just bad and it’s not intentional so there’s no point in retaliation.

Another funny observation the radio guys had since it happened a lot in the last week, with both the Braves and the Jays there were a lot of pitch-com issues in the late innings. Funny how those so common with guys on base but so rare when a pitcher is getting guys out.

Welp, the Marlins let us down, but hey the Rockies, you’re a pal - your win put the Mets in a tie with the Braves. A round of donuts on the house for you.

New York takes on Cincy tomorrow.

We managed to take one of the three games at least. LOL!

Mets beat the Reds on a homer by Vientos leading off the tenth. The Mets booth had brought up and basically agreed with the idea of walking Vientos to set up the possibility of Alonso hitting into a DP, and I also thought that was a good idea for the Reds. Fortunately, they didn’t walk him.

Cool, needed that with the Braves winning - yeah Alonso’s swinging at a lot of pitches he should let go on the outside of the box - he has his good games, but he looks like he’s reaching/forcing it at other times.

And they haven’t lost since that day. 9 in a row now. Half a game behind Arizona for the second wild card.

The real test will be the series later on against the Phillies and Braves.

Poor rookie the Phillies put in to start the game today did not do well, 10 runs in the first 3 innings. Pretty sad to start your time in the majors with an ERA of almost 35.

Too many Phillies going in the injured list or just out with injuries this last week, really bad timing for this to be happening.

Hey, the Royals were mentioned on the front page of MLB.com. Of course it’s only because they’re playing the Yankees, but we take whatever small favors we can get.

Yesterday we got the improbable win on a wild pitch and a passed ball to jump past the Braves…

And in sad news, Ed Kranepool, who joined the team at 17, and played in more games than any Met (18 seasons worth), passed away.

RIP Steady Eddie.

The Braves just lost, and earlier, the Mets broke up a no hitter in a 6 run ninth to get the win. Funny thing, they were hitting the ball throughout, really hard, but not enough to get it into the stands, or they’d hit where they could be easily fielded.

So, we are back above Atl, with the Phillies up next on Friday.

In a season where the Cardinals are meh, Ohtani’s 50/50 quest has been a fun distraction. The West Coast games are on too late for me, so I haven’t seen it live, but I’ve been reading about it and watching clips. Aaron Judge’s quest to break his own AL HR record has also been fun, but he’s been stuck at 51 for a bit. Still impressive, though!

Not on the major league level, but how embarrassing for the Twins’ organization.
