i didn’t expect to see this in a top ten! i need to rewatch. i only recently learned about the behind-the-scenes drama, so it should be interesting either way!

The scenes with people seeing their “best day” are golden. I also love the party within the party stuff. It features some beautiful whistling and Bruce’s emo stuff. Last time I looked it wasn’t streaming anywhere but I still have an old DVD

In no order:

Animal Crackers
Dr. Strangelove
Christmas Vacation
In the Loop
This Is Spinal Tap
Murder by Death (despite a very problematic performance from Sellers)
Monty Python’s Life of Brian
The Big Lebowski
Slap Shot (though it also hasn’t aged well either)

I’m listing them in order of release year and I’m going with these 11. It’s one funnier than 10, isn’t it?

Yikes, I knew I’d forget one: 1972’s Le Grand Blond avec une chaussure noire (The Tall Blond Man with One Black Shoe).

Oh well, if @Serein can turn it up to eleven, so can I.

The Bird Cage! How could I forget that one! Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman. Comedy gold.

I love The Thin Man movies, or at the very least, the ones I’ve seen. My husband turned me onto them, after his parents turned him onto them as a kid.

I also like the following, in no particular order:

It Happened One Night
Down With Love (which is a pastiche of the Doris Day/Rock Hudson movies)
Some Like It Hot
Life of Brian (for the lapsed Catholic in me)
Young Frankenstein
The Major and The Minor (Billy Wilder’s first Hollywood movie)
The Wrong Guy (little-seen Dave Foley movie)
Anchorman
Shaun of the Dead
The Cabin In The Woods (which my husband saw alone in a theater in a dead mall that has since been demolished)
National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation
Mean Girls
Clueless

These are just off the top of my head. I know I’ve probably forgotten some.

Great movie… the blackest of black comedies.

In very precise, carefully curated order:

Young Frankenstein
Ghostbusters
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Anchorman
Galaxy Quest
Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery
Mallrats
Better Off Dead
Real Genius
Hot Fuzz

There are some truly excellent movies on other people’s lists that I really don’t think of as comedies, like The Princess Bride, Groundhog Day, and Ed Wood.

  4. Ed Wood
  5. The Princess Bride
  6. Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead

Wait, something has to drop off this list, because What We Do in the Shadows belongs on there.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople
The Wrong Guy
Raising Arizona
Black Dynamite
The Muppet Movie
Burn After Reading (if you like John La Carre, that but even funnier… and I think John wrote a lot already with dark humour)
The Jerk
