Got this voicemail today, from a number in Michigan:
“Regarding your today’s purchase on amazon.com. You have been charged with $449 on your Visa card. If you have made this purchase and recognize it then simply hang up and your order will be delivered to you. However if you have not made any such transactions and want to cancel then press one and simply stay on the line to connect to our Amazon customer support executive. Thank you.”
I wonder what type of scam they would try to pull if I answered that call and pressed one?

They’d ask for your credit card number “in order to refund the purchase” , and then steal the number.

When scammy places call, I am morbidly curious to the scam and play along for a while to get to what it is they are trying to get to…its fun…and wastes their time for a bit!
My favorite was I received a Paypal invoice to my work email…our company doesn’t use PayPal. So ok…I call them. Bla bla bla…they wanted me to go to a URL. Ok…they said it SO-O-O-O slow double you…double you…(I’m like "Really???) T…e…a…m…v…i… Stop there…why do I need to go to this URL? So we can reverse the charge. Um…why do you need remote access to reverse a charge from your company? That’s how it’s done. You suck…stop scamming people!

By the way, even really tech-savvy people can fall victim to phishing, apparently. Could make you feel better or worse, depending on how you squint or which side of the bed you woke up on this morning:

I got a couple of phishing attempts after commenting on YouTube videos. One wanted me to follow them on Telegram. Another claimed I’d won a “free giveaway” and wanted my contact info. What was really disturbing is that in both cases, the phishers used the creators’ icons in their own messages! And in comments for two different creators. Anyone else seen this happen?

Yeah, I remember a big spate of that happening on some high follower YouTube channels I subscribe to, to the point that at least one made a video warning people they weren’t doing a giveaway and to block and report the comments.

Several of the YouTube channels I follow have had to make videos saying not to fall for those scammers.
