If you had to guess, how long would you say it took to build the Empire State Building?

The Empire State Building, 102 Floors, the tallest building in the world until the World Trade Center(s), was built, entirely…in less than a year. It was actually closer to six months !

More like thirteen months. Construction started on March 17, 1930, and the building opened thirteen and a half months afterward on May 1, 1931. Admittedly the bulk of the high steel work was probably finished in the first six months, but then there’s plumbing, wiring, elevators, facade stone work, windows, floors, etc., etc.

The rock for the Empire State Building was quarried from a quarry in Oolitic, Indiana. It’s a short drive south of Bloomington, where I grew up.

It also has a limestone statue of Joe Palooka, a comic strip character that almost no one remembers. But it’s right in the middle of their very small town.

Yeah, Wiki has it “Topped Off” in September of that same year. In truth, by the time you’re done building the top floor, you’ll already have preventive and actual maintenance to do on the first.

So Oolitic is the original Palookaville?

What would you call someone from Oolitic ?

An Oolitician? Ooliot?

A person from Oolitic is also called an Oolitic. Their high school team is called the Oolitic Oolitics.

Which is probably one reason why these days the facade and windows start being installed just a few weeks later, following the structure as it rises. That, and the accelerated timelines most construction seems to be on now.

For years the US nuclear launch codes were deliberately set to “00000000”. And it seems in the UK they just secured nuclear weapons with bike locks.

There’s no way this has been declassified. So it’s either a cover story, or completely made up, or Dr. Bruce Blair will have received a visit from some men in dark suits.
