Well, the good news is, it’s on Wikipedia, so you can change it to say calque and loanword are types of fish. That would sound less confusing.
Hỏa Lò Prison was a notorious prison for POWs run by North Vietnam during the Vietnam war. It was known as the Hanoi Hilton. Now there is literally a Hanoi Hilton.
William Phelps Eno invented traffic regulations, the stop sign, the crosswalk, the roundabout, the one-way street and pedestrian safety islands. He never learned how to drive.
The Hupfeld Phonoliszt-Violina is a musical instrument that combines a player piano and three violins!
This quote had me wondering:
“The whole pneumatic systems are controlled by an electric engine of uninterrupted current.”
Where do I pour the electric for the engine ? And do I need 5% AC electric, or can I burn DC?
TIL Pizza Hut is bringing back the old fashioned Pizza Hut as “Pizza Hut Classic.”
They’ve lapped themselves with marketing!
Here’s a fun fact: Sachiko Kobayashi, the enka singer best known for singing the ending theme to the Pokémon movie: Mewtwo Strikes Back and its 3D remake, titled “風といっしょに (Together with the Wind)”, is also a voice provider for a Vocaloid voicebank, also named “Sachiko”.
Everything wants to be a crab. Ok, maybe not everything, but enough does that there’s an actual scientific term for the tendency for things that aren’t crabs to evolve-into a crablike form, carcinisation.
This fact brought to you by Crabby the Crab Hat.
Watch out for Australia.
Dancer Lionel Douglass (Big D of The Lockers) was one of the Predators in Predator 2 and choreographed this music video with the other predators and Danny Glover.
True fact: the next time one is thinking about moving, these are the two options:
(i) Acquire several g*ylords/shuttle containers, and shove everything in there.
(ii) Wrap in mylar everything atop a pallet.
Either way, you’re going to need a ramp, a pallet jack and a sheetload of mylar wrap and a number of g*ylord/shuttle containers.
And at least a box truck.
But, I’ve concluded those are the only ways to move.
/* Really? Got modded down for that? G*ylord is literally the name of the company. Also the first name of a pretty infamous MLB pitcher. Much like how Jiffies are called.
You also will want any number of good wooden pallets, but you can scrounge those pretty easy, I guess.*/
The word filter is an automatic forum software setting, not a moderator action. Publicly questioning the judgment of the moderation team for this experience is inappropriate, and quite irritating, honestly.
If you spot something getting filtered that shouldn’t be, we can look into it. Just ask. Politely.
I think you have misunderstood some things. We all agree that the Discourse software “mods down” some things sua sponte.
We also all agree that no person speaking here has questioned the moderation team.
I’d suggest that this direction is a distraction and further commentary be directed to another thread or forum.
For me, I’d rather hew to the topic of this thread and remind everyone that
“We” do not “all agree.”
Well, then perhaps it’s not worth a grand digression! If I may speak timidly, there is no problem. I found it amusing that a very common surname and a well known product name is stricken from the records by Discourse. It’s not intended to be an accusation against any moderators, but just a mild source of amusement.
/* edit…yeah…I thought it was clear I was referring to Discourse’s system, not to any actual person…just mildly amusing to me is all, the surprises Discourse has in store! There’s no percentage in my criticizing actual people (here, anyway!), so I avoid it! A misunderstanding, is all. */
A single random fact is that in 1979 a revision of the Clementine Vulgate called the Nova Vulgata was approved by the Vatican and causes some problems for those who have older editions of the Clementine and English or French translations based on the latest textual evidence.
Also, editions of the Nova Vulgata tend to be horrendously expensive…at least the one’s I’ve seen at the Zon.
The word “catholic” means united, and all encompassing.
a FACT is that @Spotty_Boots has a cake day…you know what that means, right?
A good old hootenanny.
