STAR TREK You Know It-You Love It-Let's Talk About It!

I love Galaxy Quest! Since I’ve been to many Trek-cons, much of the way fans and the conventions are portrayed in the movie is accurate. Galaxy Quest may be better than some of the weaker Trek movies…but I’d say most Trek movies are better than Galaxy Quest.

Or maybe its hard for me to compare comedies to serious sci-fi…but I do LOVE Spaceballs!

I think I feel like there’s many Trek movies that are better at being Star Trek than Galaxy Quest, but Galaxy Quest is probably a better movie than most Trek movies.

The more I thought about Galaxy Quest over the years the more I hold it in high regard. It wears a lot of hats but pulls it all off well without ever being terribly showy about it or drawing a bunch of attention to itself.

It works as a parody of Trek, obviously, but it also works as an all ages comedy without depending on familiarity with what its parodying. I saw it in theaters when I was 12, and enjoyed it very much despite having only the vaguest notion of what Star Trek was at that point. There are some in-jokes for fans but most of the humor is driven by characters and situation, not being dependent on someone’s knowledge of Trek to be funny. It also works well as Sci-Fi, with the central premise being a really good idea to explore. And by the end it’s morphed into a genuinely good light action movie. Not to mention that along the way it has a lot of playful fun with Trek fandom (or just fandom in general) yet does so in a loving, respectful way. That’s a whole lot of stuff to do and yet it pulls all of it off and gets none of it wrong.

That’s quite a feat when you think about it.

I love Galaxy Quest. It gets quoted almost as often as the Princess Bride.

Having been to lots of cons in my youth, that side of it was painfully accurate in some ways. But the action was good Tim Allen and Alan Rickman are just perfect in their roles.

Is it a Star Trek movie? No, it’s a bit of a send up to Trek culture and fan conventions, but much of the plot stands on it’s own without the Trek-ish supports.

I’ll chime in on the love of Galaxy Quest.

There are two types of parodies: mean-spirited where the parody dives into outright mockery and derision and light-hearted where the love for the original source is obvious and the teasing is more like would happen among friends. Galaxy Quest is absolutely the latter and it’s clearly done by people who understand both the show and the fans of the show.

Plus, as mentioned, it absolutely works as a comedy separate from all of that. Tony Shaloub’s character who just doesn’t care about anything and the nameless “red-shirt” who goes to the conventions because he has nothing else really stand out for me. Plus, I loved Sigourney Weaver’s realization that she just repeats what the computer says but also that the computer only listens to her.

And the end result of all their adventures is a renewed sense of purpose for what they do. It’s just so well done.

It’s also got the best ensemble since ‘Sneakers’.

Also, I keep trying to think of a reason for Beverly Crusher to have had a stunt double. I honestly can’t think of a single stunt she ever did.

When she was stuck in the warp bubble, and Wesley and the Traveler help her escape before it collapsed.
I think a stunt double was used.

Maybe, but that looks like they were shooting something outdoors. Also, those don’t look like standard show outfits. Maybe movie outfits? Maybe that was from Picard season 3?

Oh you’re thinking the most recent shows. I’m thinking during the TNG series

Well just based on that photo. Although there could have been a couple of times a stunt double was needed like the one you said. But this looks like some ensemble deal.

Maybe it’s the TNG cast someone ordered from Wish

Something in my gut tells me from those uniforms (or maybe the surrounding area) it’s from Insurrection. It’s one of the TNG movies at least.

It might be. In fact, the bald guy on the end could just as easily have been Tom Hardy’s stunt double rather than Patrick Stewart’s. Or even both.

If Tom Hardy was involved, then you’re talking about Nemesis, not Insurrection.
