STAR TREK You Know It-You Love It-Let's Talk About It!

They did a riff on that on ‘Third Rock’ when Shatner guest starred.

It was pretty funny.

A lot of the chat I’ve seen regarding the Very Short Treks is despairing at the edginess, crudity or lack of respect in them. I see where people are coming from, and I do think that Adult Swim was an odd choice of partner for these, though essentially Lower Decks is AS adjacent. Personally I always liked shows like Sealab 2021 and Harvey Birdman, and I love the Filmation aesthetic, so I’m quite enjoying them as a curio. It’s interesting to see what someone will to with the setting if they don’t have the weight if canon on them, maybe this will open the door for stand-alone alt universe stories from other creatives.

I’m actually impressed at how hard the creators worked to recreate that Filmation aesthetic, given that almost no one in the commercial animation industry has used hand-drawn and -inked cels in, what, almost two decades now? The slight misregistration wobbles, shadows from cels not pressed completely flat to the background, the occasional film scratch, the wow and flutter in the taped soundtrack — it’s all there.

Yeah, the style is great, but those scripts!

Hoo boy. Not working for me at ALL.

I thought the first one was pretty funny. This one not so much.

FYI: Another Strange New World comic book mini-series (5 issues) has started, though it doesn’t seem to have anything to do with events of the season 2 finale.

It’s named “The Scorpius Run”, and the spoiler-free description includes: “the Enterprise crew learn what it truly means to traverse through the strange and unfamiliar when they lose contact with Starfleet and find themselves trapped in unexplored space!”

This one seems even less likely to get referenced or have repercussions in the streaming series than the post-season-1 story, The Illyrian Enigma (which didn’t). But, hey, I’m along for the ride/run/whatever.

Ewww. Just… ewww.

Remember a few years ago when some of us were afraid of what Lower Decks might be like? THIS is what we were afraid of.

There’s one thing these things are good at - taking a completely unfunny joke and driving it into the ground.

I give up.
