I was browsing Tubi a while back when I stumbled on a “documentary” (and I use that term loosely here) I haven’t seen in years. This used to be my “go-to” guide for bad movies around the time I was getting into MST3K but looking back at it, I’d say that it has aged rather poorly. Basically, it’s reminiscent of those countdown videos you see on YouTube, where an announcer gives a brief overview of the entries. Nothing groundbreaking here.
You’ll notice that there are several films that were featured on MST3K as well as The Film Crew and RiffTrax, although there are a few choices that to a cinema aficionado would seem rather questionable (I mean “Spider Baby?” Really?). The big sticking point is that the segments tend to be less than a minute long and only showcase the film’s trailer for the most part. The descriptions are often meatless and the rationale for why the film is bad is sometimes non-existent. Throw in a cheap “crowd throwing food at the screen” animation repeated ad-nauseam and you get a doc that is no less insightful than a casual viewer’s online review.
Take a peek and tell me what you guys think. (CW: Nudity in some entries).
That’s what this is. It’s probably just movies Brandon Christopher (writer, no editor or director on this project at all) pulled off the top of his head plus a few IMDB searches. I mean, honestly, Ishtar? The Trial of Billy Jack? JD’s Revenge isn’t even a bad movie.
Kind of inexcusable in 2004. No Feeders, no Things, not a single slasher! We can cut some slack for, say, The Room and Julie and Jack being missing, since they were only made in 2003, but no Fred Olen Ray? No Jim Wynorski (with Munchie right there)?!
Is Plan 9 From Outer Space even the worst movie of 1957? Is it even the worst movie starring Tor Johnson from 1957?!
Plan 9 is obviously a terrible movie, but I think it gets a bad rap because, unlike a lot of bad movies (Manos, for example), it’s a really fun movie. There are no boring parts. It’s 1 hour and 19 minutes of highly entertaining chaos.
Probably not, but it’s likely his best-known worst-movie. Even in the digital age, the very worst movies have probably not been seen or are even known about by very many people, so the same names get bandied about all the time.
