The Kalevala is what Tolkein wanted The Silmarillion to be. The Tale of the Children of Hurin is based heavily on the tale of Kullervo (with a dose of Nibelungenleid), who does not appear in the film for good reason.

That doesn’t surprise me. J. R. R. Tolkien spent a lot of time in Norse mythology and writings.
