I actually sat down and watched the whole thing, which isn’t something I do a lot.
The explanations get increasingly bizarre, and there are references to Werner Herzog, David Lynch–oh, Linda Cardellini (who played Velma in the live-action movies) plays a very Velma-looking-character who is not Velma…there’s a whole episode devoted, Cabin in the Woods-style to the “three humans and an intelligent non-human” Hanna-Barbera formula.
If you like that show (I really should watch the whole thing), I would also recommend another quality reboot in The New Looney Tunes Show, if you haven’t seen it, it did a great job of mocking the current trends and stuff, while keeping the heart of the Chuck Jones era Looney Tunes episodes (my personal fave director and art style for the series)…
It’s a sitcom style that is reminiscent of Seinfeld, with Bugs living in a neighborhood of the characters. Daffy mooches off of him and is hilarious. It also has some really funny songs.
I own it on amazon, but haven’t downloaded it yet… I need to.
On a synchronistic sidenote, I have another back and forth going on the TVs Frank thread, and we’ve been talking about a David Lynch movie… What a great way to come full circle…
I love that crazy man… One of my favorite quotes from him is “The primary colors are bullsh*t.”
Also, Linda Cardellini is great… was it a twin peaksy thing where she is like Maddy, Laura’s cousin?
No, she’s actually one of the scamsters, the daughter of a carnival owner, and the kids know her as “the girl who smells like hot dog water”. And IIRC, the fact that Hot Dog Water looks like a slightly stylized Velma is never addressed.
However, when one of the gang drops out, Hot Dog Waters fills in. But it’s not Velma who drops out but Daphne. For a couple of episodes there are basically two Velmas. She actually has quite the character arc.
NBC used to do crossover nights a lot. Mad About You, Seinfeld, and Friends. There was … Nurses, Golden Girls and Empty Nest.
My favorite crossover episodes are still the L&O/Homicide episodes and I am deeply disappointed that Munch didn’t get the chance to play Briscoe’s partner when Benjamin Bratt left.
Holy crap! I’ve read that novel several times and am only just learning that it was part of a crossover!
Those early Trek books were all pretty loose and I’d always figured it was just a jobbing author throwing ideas from her own fiction into a Star Trek context, and Pocket saying “Sure, whatever.” It is definitely one of the weirder ones.
I can imagine that if you’d never seen Here Come the Brides, the book would be pretty confusing.
Fun Fact: Mark Lenard, who played Spock’s dad on ST, also played Aaron Stemple on Here Come the Brides.
Other Fun Facts: Bo Svenson, who played Kor the Conquerer in Wizards of the Lost Kingdom was on Here Come the Brides, and Robert Browne, who played Lazarus A and B on ST was the star of HCtB.
I still fondly remember How Much For Just The Planet? It should’ve been a TV special with Robert Preston and Bea Arthur in the co-starring roles. No one will ever change my mind about this, either. So nobody should try.
The ultimate Saturday morning cartoon crossover has to be Cartoon All-Stars To The Rescue, which is a culmination of the anti-drug propaganda Xennials were raised with (and yes, this is the full episode):
Magnum PI and Simon & Simon did a fun crossover. Simon & Simon also had a not so great cross over with the short-lived series Whiz Kids (anyone else remember that show … exactly)
The recently ended Hawaii Five-0 did a crossover with NCIS Los Angeles that worked pretty well. And any number of Five-0 characters are now appearing in the recent Magnum PI reboot.
