What the Gizmoplex could have been

Two of the content creators I follow launched their own websites this year. One you might be familiar with–since they took the Kickstarter belt from MST3k–is Critical Role. The other, perhaps lesser know, but you might have seen their videos around, is New Zealand sketch comedy group Viva La Dirt League.

All the way back to the Season 13 KS, I was concerned about the Gizmoplex’s sustainability. I was happy to support s13 (and when it came around s14). But way back in the beginning, I though paying streamer prices for a single season of a single show (per year…as I thought would be the case) would quickly wear thin on the fan base, with nothing else to offer.

To be fair, it turns out I enjoyed experiencing the livestreams (as opposed to just watching new episodes whenever) a lot more than I expected, even the tribute and enhanced episodes. Maybe just forcing myself to join live DID make it feel like more of an event, like they said. Even if I just watched on my own, and didn’t follow along with chat.

But seeing these new services from CR and VLDL pop up just makes me think about what the Gizmoplex COULD have been (and still could be, if a revival ever happens).

Of course MST3K is a bit different than these other two groups. Their content is niche, focused, and high production cost. I’m sure CR has a decent production budget, but even without movie rights, an episode of MST3K probably far outpaces even multiple CR streams. CR also has a pretty well established revenue stream between Twitch subs, sponsorships, heavy merchandising, and who knows what else.

VLDL does much shorter form content. And since a recent KS campaign helped them fund their own studio (with dedicated sets for their most popular shows, and one of, if not THE biggest green screen in NZ), their production schedules have gotten easier, and probably cheaper. They, too, had existing revenue streams from YT, some sponsorships, and Patreon (which their new site is meant to replace Patreon).

One of the thing both services offer is exclusive shows. That’s definitely where MST3K’s narrow-focused content hampers them in this respect. So it would be harder to find exclusive content they could produce. True, the entire s13 was exclusive–at least until it migrated to other platforms. But having additional exclusive content that supporters could access with a monthly fee could provide consistent revenue that the Gizmoplex never did (probably because most everyone who would pay for Gizmoplex access already did so during the KS).

Still, MST3K has options. Independent host segments. Maybe put new shorts under a subscription plan. Livestreams like we saw during the s13 KS. There’s still salaries and production costs to consider here. Less than a full episode, and maybe too much to produce fast enough to support a subscription model, but it’s an idea.

VLDL’s service also has things like bloopers and behind-the-scenes videos under their subscription service. That’s something else the Gizmoplex could do for (mostly) just the cost of editing already filmed content. Only the people at MST3K can know what other ideas they might be able to make viable so that content is frequent and cost efficient enough to support people willing to subscribe.

If there’s ever to be a revival, not just of season 14, but the Gizmoplex itself, I hope these are ideas they consider. Perhaps, with a little capital, a reboot of the Gizmoplex could even be the FIRST step in beginning to fund season 14.

It isn’t new original content, but the old episodes were supposed to be behind a subscription on the Gizmoplex. Then they went free “for a year” which has seemingly become in perpetuity.

But I think you hit on one of the big hurdles in that a large portion of people who would be their paid subscriber base got access for free through the KS.

If it somehow turned out that 13 new shorts were more manageable than 13 new movies, I’d still be there in a heartbeat.

It’s mostly shorts which I watch on other channels, after all.

Among the differences, is also a high level of engagement in discord with the actual creators. And if MST3K wanted lower budget stuff, they could also have run a D&D campaign with talented voice actors or run a twitch channel with Tom Servo playing PUBG or floating in a hot tub.

Note, I’ve made many of these suggestions on this forum before. However, sadly there is no indication that anyone with the power to make a revival happen reads this forum.

I’d still like to have full seasons. But if they could create enough smaller and cheaper content throughout the year, those seasons could maybe be spread out to every couple of years. Or longer.

Or dispense with seasons altogether and put out a couple of full episodes per year. Whatever make sense for their time and budget, just so long as smaller form content comes out regular enough to keep people subbed and revenue consistent.

They could offer other things too. Maybe higher tier subs get you access to virtual classes. Private AMAs. Or collaborative riffing sessions in a moderated chat setting. Stuff like that. Whatever they think they could pull off to offer extra value without too much cost.

They definitely need more community engagement.

I don’t think “Here’s a season, now we’ll vanish until we think of the next thing” will cut it if they want a sustainable Gizmoplex business model.

I think if they were following a Patreon model, it would involve a routine or schedule with new episodes every fortnight, but other content to allow weekly releases. Maybe they could get away with one full episode release per month. :person_shrugging:

Of course it’s hard to say what would work. For YouTube channels, VLDL has 6.58M subscribers and Critical Role has 2.2M. MST3K has 250k. So what can work for them, might not be possible for MST3K.

I do think it would be nice for the Gizmoplex to have differentiated itself in someway from other streaming options. Like if it made watch alongs easier. If for example you purchased a license that allowed you to create a streaming source for a number of people with live text chat or for a premium voice chat.

1 full episode a month is what they had for s13. I think they would have to work up to that for it to be sustainable. They need to look at something smaller scale that they can produce and release regularly to maintain subscriptions.

It doesn’t even have to be produced content, but other community engagement that people would be willing to pay for. There’s a lot of room for brainstorming here.

That was supposed to be the live events. I was never certain whether that would be enough long term, and relies on them to continually producing full episode content to support the live events. And any other streaming features would require them to last long enough to pay someone to develop new Gizmoplex features.
