Video Game Box Art

What’s your favourite video game cover (or “cover” in the age of downloading games).

I love that this looks like a sci-fi epic as a man pilots a planet-sized generation ship to find a new home across eons but it’s… basic.

I love the overall aesthetic of the old Atari boxes, with art promising so much more than those machines could ever possibly deliver.

The arcade version of Centipede looked like a rad tattoo, but the box cover for the 2600 cartridge had a much friendlier looking set of characters. (And a bonus mini comic inside!) I love the shoes on the spider.

And while I don’t think I ever played the actual game, I was always fascinated by the fly spaceship art on the cover of Yars’ Revenge.

And then when the NES came along, Goonies II had a cover that looked like a poster for an actual movie sequel.

And I also loved the Dragon Warrior cover, which had a unique aesthetic for the time.

(Now to sit back and wait for somebody to post that Mega Man cover …)

There are surprisingly few ducks on this one.

Do you remember that came with a cassette tape?

I own this book; I got it as a birthday present. It is worth reading as it talks a lot about the people who made those Atari video game covers, the creative process and more.

Very Yellow Submarine and yet very accurate to the game.

This has nothing to do with the game except the space ship. But the creators wanted a way to stand out. It’s odd but it works.

According to my Art of Atari book, this cover was illustrated by Susan Jaekel. Now this definitely has a Beatles feel to it!

On another note, the death scene in this game is hilarious!

And the legs of the splatted character kept moving. Won’t anyone think of what these violent video games are doing to the children?!?!?

(I loved Circus Atari.)

Violent video games nothing, did you ever see the lewd, smutty Atari porn games?

Think of the children!

Remember the Nintendo Black Box games? These had images similar of the games within; this was a response to the earlier Atari/Intellivision/Colecovision era which used more “artistic” covers (see above). This was meant to show the consumers exactly what they were getting as quality assurance. The video game crash of 1983-1984 was caused by a flood of bad games.
