I’ve been rewatching Kids in the Hall front to back over the past couple months, and they say “skit” like a thousand times, so I no longer know what to believe.

Apparently there are some in the halls of SNL who use the word skit. Just goes to show the esteemed level of people who can still be COMPLETELY WRONG

Oh, that’s fair! To the layperson, the terms are interchangeable. They both refer to short, scripted, standalone pieces of performed comedy. However, to those who have trained in or performed sketch or improvisational comedy, the term “skit” has a (unintentionally, to be sure) pejorative context. It implies an amateurish, unprofessional bent to the entire affair. I’m not entirely sure why this is. But everyone in the sketch community feels it. I think it comes from people saying things like, …

Basically, the term “skit” implies amateurism. Which, while most often unintentional, is insulting to those of us who work very hard and professionally on them. Feel free to keep using it if you like! I can’t stop you. But I’ll be annoyed by it every time.

See my comment I linked to above. I grant that it’s a truly inconsequential semantic difference, like a doctor expecting everyone to know the terms for two different kinds of scalpels.

But basically I’d say it’s level of professionalism.
