In another MST3K group, a friend brought up the question of what the “cool thing” Joel and the bots saw really was, and it struck me that we might actually have an answer now.
Tom saw the opening of a portal in space, and called the others over. It got even better when they could see through it to the surface of the Moon. Then, even more amazing (which is why they couldn’t tell us), the SOL from the end of season 13 came through.
And then they made up that sorry story about Mexican stoplight candy as a cover! Brilliant!

Max was dead the entire season.
Emily is Keyser Soze.
Tyler Durden was Jonah’s other personality.
Kelsey Ann Brady.
So it was the walrus the entire time!
It wasn’t the Eggman?
But they didn’t see a flag on the moon, because how would it have gotten there?
I just hope this doesn’t culminate in some La Jete’ type denouement in which Joel ends up shooting his other self and doesn’t even know it!!
And somehow he still winds up getting replaced by Eddie.
The cool thing was that the movie finally ended!
