There are other types of love besides romantic love. Love of your fellow man, for instance. This is an anti- song about that kind of love.

R.E.M. “The One I Love” is far from a love song. “A simple prop to occupy my time.” I read they thought about not including it on the album because it was so mean.

Ian was writing about the break down of his own relationship with his wife. And in many ways was the raw baring of his soul foreshadowing his suicide.
If that alone marks it as anti-love, I don’t know what would.
